PSA Brest International Squash Classic
du 6 au 10 avril 2015

A very good first edition.

Let's start with the first satisfaction of the tournament : the organising team (Pauline, Lea, Benoit and myself) ; I'm very happy they were part of this adventure, and really delighted that we were able to see this project through, all together.

Many thanks to Yves as well, for standing us, and to Nico as a referee. This first edition truly turned out to be successful, all feedback from the players were really good, as well as those received from the public or the sponsors. So we are in for a second tournament next year, to share our passion for squash, and for the people who work for it.

Talking about them, my grateful thanks to the PSA for helping us, and to Sitesquash and Framboise for the coverage of the tournament.

Without passionnate people squash would be nothing.

Mark Fuller, le joueur de Nottingham qui est bien connu à Brest puisqu’il y a joué en équipe 1 il n’y a pas si longtemps, affronte Joel Hinds, de Derby, qui participe à sa deuxième finale consécutive après celle à Aberdeen la semaine dernière.
Les deux joueurs commencent fort, avec des points âprement disputés, de longs échanges en revers qui suscitent l’admiration des spectateurs venus en nombre.

Hinds prend l’avantage à 8-5 avant que son compatriote ne recolle et prend même la tête un court instant 9-8, mais c’est le mieux classé des deux qui finit par l’emporter d’une courte tête 11-9.

Dans le deuxième jeu, Fuller essaie d’imposer son rythme et de prendre la balle plus tôt, mais il fait plus de fautes directes, et s’expose plus aux contre-attaques de son adversaire. Le score, 11-02, ne reflète pas l’intensité des échanges mais c’est donc Hinds qui prend une option sur la victoire finale.
Dans le 3ème jeu, c’est au tour de Hinds de faire plus de fautes, bien aidé en cela il est vrai par les prises d’initiative de son adversaire qui impose un rythme très élevé à la partie, et remporte la manche 11-03.

Le 4è jeu voit Hinds se détacher rapidement, malgré une belle résistance de Fuller, et s’imposer sur le score de 11-2.

Joel Hinds est donc le premier lauréat du Brest International Squash Classic !

Mark Fuller from Nottingham, a well-known player here in Brest as he used to play for the club’s team a couple of years ago, challenges Joel Hinds, from Derby, who plays his second final in a row after ending runner-up in Aberdeen last week.
Both players starts on a high basis, with fiercely-fought-for shots, long rallies, who leave the public, that had come in great numbers, in awe. Hinds leads 8-5 but his fellow Englishman comes back and even takes the lead 9-8 for a short time, before letting Hinds conclude the game 11-9.

In the second game, Fuller tries to play quicker and to take the ball earlier, but he makes a few unforced errors, and Hinds retrieves well. The score, 11-02, is a bit hard and doesn’t pay tribute to the intensity of the game. Hinds is now ahead 2-0 and can foresee a Breton victory.

Fuller tries and give his pace to the 3rd game, and it does work : Hinds makes a few errors, forced by Mark’s powerful and quick shots, Fuller is back in the match, only 1-2 down now.
In the 4th, Hinds takes a early lead that enables him to stay well ahead of Fuller, who keeps fighting but is eventually defeated 11-02.

Joel : “The first game was hard, we were very close. As the second game started he started playing quicker, I was glad I could win it anyway. In the third, he kept on playing faster and he won it rather easily.

It was important to make a god start in the 4th, that’s what I did and I was ahead with a confortable lead, so that I could eventually win.

I enjoyed the tournament, I had never been to Brest before and I could enjoy the sunshine this week!”

« Le premier jeu était très dur et très serré. Dès le deuxième jeu il a commencé à jouer plus vite, j’étais donc content de réussir à l’emporter. Lors du troisième jeu, il a continué à accélérer le jeu et c’est pour cela qu’il l’a emporté facilement.

Il était important de bien commencer le 4è jeu, j’ai pris la tête avec une avance confortable, et cela m’a permis de l’emporter. Je n’étais jamais venu à Brest mais j’ai apprécié le tournoi, et la météo magnifique de la semaine»

"I'm disappointed because I don't think I have played as well as I could have. Hinds put a lot of pressure on me, more than I put on him.

I hope I can play in Brest again soon"

Dans cette première demi-finale, nous assistons à la confrontation entre les têtes de série numéro 1 (le Hollandais Weenink) et 3 (l’Anglais Hinds). Le premier jeu est serré, les deux joueurs alternent longs échanges le long des murs et séries d’amorties bien senties. Les joueurs ont chacun leur tour l’occasion de conclure, mais c’est l’Anglais qui négocie mieux le tie-break et l’emporte 12-10.

Le début du second jeu est plus compliqué pour le Néerlandais, qui est rapidement mené et ne parvient pas à inverser la tendance. L’Anglais continue à amener son adversaire fréquemment à l’avant, à l’aide de double-murs ou d’amorties, et ce dernier semble un peu moins bien physiquement ; c’est donc Hinds qui assez logiquement remporte cette manche pour prendre le large et mener deux jeux à rien.

Le 3è jeu est à sens unique, Weenink prend rapidement le contrôle des échanges et s’impose sans trop de frayeur 11-02.

Le 4è jeu est à l’image du premier : indécis, ponctué de longs échanges au cours desquels Weenink court beaucoup, l’Anglais arrive à prendre le dessus sur les points importants : à 8-7 il se détache et obtient 3 balles de match. Weenink parvient à en écarter deux mais doit s’avouer vaincu sur une dernière faute directe, échouant d’un souffle à 11-9.

Nous assisterons donc à une finale 100 % anglaise !

In the first semi-final , Weenink, the Dutch champion and seeded number one in this tournament, plays Hinds, seeded number 3. The first game is rather tight, both players engaging in long rallies along the walls, but also varying with series of dropshots perfectly played. Both players have, in turn, an occasion to pocket the first game, but the Englishman deals better with the tie-break and wins the first game 12-10.

As the second game starts, things are getting more complicated for the Dutch who lets his opponent take an early lead without being able to come back. The Englishman keeps on double-boasting or dropshotting his opponent to the front wall, and Weenink seems to be suffering physically. Hinds therefore wins the game, and leads now 2-0.

The 3rd game is a one-way one, Weenink is in control of the game and comes back in the match, 2-1.

The 4th game is very much like the 1st one : uncertain, with long rallies during which Weenink has to run a lot to retrieve everything. Hinds manages to take the advantage at the right time : at 8-7 he wins two points in a row to make it to 10-7 and get 3 match balls. Weenink does well, putting away 2 of them, but a last unforced error gives the victory to his opponent.

We will therefore have a 100% English final.

Mark Fuller bt Adam Murrills 7-11 4-2 (Ab)

Place aux têtes de série n°5 (Murrils) et 6 (Fuller), pour un match qui s’annonçait très prometteur entre deux joueurs agréables à voir jouer. Le premier jeu est globalement dominé par Murrills, qui prend l’avantage dès le début : 5-2 puis 7-3, il l’emporte finalement 11-7.

Dans le deuxième jeu, Fuller débute mieux, il mène 4-2 lorsque sur une balle qu’il allait chercher à l’avant du court, le joueur de Manchester s’écroule. Murrills ne pourra pas reprendre le match ; blessé à l’adducteur, malheureusement pour lui et pour nous tous qui appréciions le spectacle offert par les deux joueurs !

C’est donc Mark Fuller, l’ancien Brestois, qui défiera demain Joel Hind, à 18h30.

Next are the 5th (Murrills) and 6th (Fuller) players, the match is very expected by everyone as their way of playing has been appreciated all week. The first game is, in the whole, dominated by Murrills, who rapidly takes the lead :: 5-2 then 7-3, he eventually wins 11-7.

In the second game, Fuller makes a better start, he is ahead 4-2 when, while trying to retrieve a short ball near the front wall, the player from Manchester skids and injures himself to the leg. Unfortunately for him, and for the public, who was enjoying the show, he will not be able to start playing again…

Mark Fuller, the former player from Brest, will challenge Joel Hinds, tomorrow at 18:30.

Really happy to make in to the semi-final. Tomorrow’s match will certainly be a difficult one. I’ve played 2 finals recently, finishing runner-up both times, so I hope to qualify for a new final, and this time, win the title, especially here in Brest !

Adam Murrils (ANG, n°125) – Auguste Dussourd (FRA, n°225) : 11-4 11-1 7-1 (Abandon)

Les quarts de finale débutait par un choc franco-anglais entre d’un côté le jeune Parisien Dussourd, et de l’autre l’Anglais Murrils. Le début de match est accroché, mais rapidement l’Anglais contrôle le T et les échanges, et s’adjuge le premier jeu assez facilement 11/4.

Le Français, dès le début du second jeu, semble gêné physiquement, et il ne peut alors défendre ses chances. Après une longue pause entre le second et troisième jeu il abandonne à 7/1 contre lui dans le 3ème.

The quarter finals starts with a French-English match : Dussourd , the young player from Paris, against Murrills, from England. The early stages of the match are rather uncertain, but the Englishman takes quickly the control of the “T”, and wins rather easily the first game 11-4. As the second game starts, it is rather obvious that the Frenchman is not at his best physically, he therefore cannot give his best in the rallyes. Despite a long stop between the 2nd and 3rd games he withdraws while his opponent was ahead 7-1.

Mark Fuller (ENG, n°225) – Lyell Fuller (ANG, n°166) : 11-9 9-11 11-5 11-5

Un match très plaisant au cours duquel Mark, l’ancien Brestois, a renvoyé inlassablement les coups de Lyell, avec des amorties et des lobs bien sentis pour varier le jeu. Le premier jeu tourne à l’avantage de Mark, mais Lyell se détache d’entrée dans le 2è, jusqu’à mener 7-1 puis 10-3. Mark, malgré une belle remontée, s’incline sur le fil 11-9.

Lors des deux derniers jeux, Mark, toujours fort physiquement, prend la tête rapidement à chaque fois, pour ne plus la lâcher. Il rejoint Adam Murrills en demi-finales.

A very nice match indeed during which we could watch Mark, the former Brest player, restlessly retrieving Lyell’s shots, using drop-shots and lobs to change the pace of the game. The first game is pocketed by Mark, whereas Lyell takes the lead in the 2nd game, he leads 7-1 then 10-3. Mark comes back well but ends up losing the game 11-9. In the last two games, Mark, very fit, takes the lead early in the game and doesn’t let Lyell come back at any point. He will play Adam Murrills in semi-finals.

Sebastiaan Weenink – Arthur Moineau : 11-4 11-5 11-6

Le jeune Brestois n’a pas démérité mais n’a pas pu faire grand-chose face au Hollandais qui a été impressionnant de maîtrise tout au long de la partie, ramenant des amorties pourtant impeccablement déposées par Arthur.

Le champion des Pays-Bas a mis la pression au Brestois sur tous les points, le poussant à la faute au bout d’échanges longs et durs physiquement pour le français. Le public, présent en nombre, ne peut qu’applaudir la prestation de Weenink, qui se qualifie tranquillement pour les demi-finales.

The young player from Brest did do his best but could only accept the superiority of the player from the Netherlands, who was impressive during the whole match, retrieving dropshots from Arthur that looked perfect… The recent winner of the Netherlands championship put a lot of pressure on the Breton player, fighting on every ball, bringing him into endless rallies, exhausting his opponent. The crowd was there in numbers to support Arthur, but they had to appreciate Weenink’s performance : Sebastiaans makes his way confortably into the semi-finals.

Joel Hinds (ENG, n°94) - Ashley Davies (ANG, n°161) : 12-10 11-6 3-11 11-7

Dernier match des quarts entre deux Anglais avec un jeu très propre des deux côtés. Joel Hinds, le mieux classé des deux se reprend après un début raté (3/7) pour gagner le premier jeu au tie-break. Aucun soucis au contraire dans le second jeu (11/6). Davies joue son va-tout dans le 3ème, en imposant un rythme élevé dès le début (11/3). Mais Hinds reprend le contrôle du jeu et s’impose en 4 jeux, pour affronter demain la tête de série n°1, Wennink, demain en demi-finale.

Last match of the quarter-finals between two english man, with a very clean game on both side. The highest ranked, Joel Hinds, gets back into the game after a poor start (3/7) to close the first one (12/10).

No problem in the second game (11/6). Davies , in the third, uses everything he’s got, to impose a very high pace from the start to win it(11/3). But Hinds takes back his control, and wins in four games, to confront the number 1 seed, Wennink, in semi-finales tomorrow.

Les enfants d’une école brestoise venus découvrir le squash ont pu assister émerveillés au premier match du premier tour, avec au programme le qualifié Baptise Masotti contre la tête de série n°4, l’Anglais Joel Hinds, récent finaliste d’un tournoi en Ecosse.

Et malgré un jeune public acquis au Français, celui-ci, diminué par de fortes douleurs au dos ne réussit pas à prendre le jeu à son compte, et subit le jeu de l’Anglais. Le jeune bleu est contraint d’abandonner dans le 3ème jeu, alors qu’il était mené 2/0.

A lot of children from a nearby school had come and discover what squash was like ; and they were really impressed by this first match of the first round of the tournament. Baptiste Masotti, who had gone through the qualifications, played against the Englishman Joel Hinds, seeded nr 4 in the tournament, who recently finished runner-up in a tournament in Scotland.

Despite the young crowd in favor of the Frenchman, the former, suffering from the back, cannot play as he would like, and lets the Englishman take the control of the match. The young Frenchman has to withdraw in the 3rd game, the score was then 2-0 for Hinds.

Sebastiaan Weenink (NED, n°82) – Jaakko Vähämaa (FIN, n° 184) : 11-9 14-12 11-8

Un nouveau match très agréable à regarder durant lequel les deux adversaires se rendent coup pour coup. Le Finlandais, issu des qualifications, ne fait pas de complexe face à la tête de série numéro 1, mais s’incline de justesse dans le premier jeu.

Dans le second, il vend chèrement sa peau, sauvant 4 balles de jeu, mais s’incline finalement 14-12 à la suite d’échanges tous plus disputés les uns que les autres. Dans le troisième jeu, le néerlandais prend le large 6-3, mais le jeune Finlandais recolle à 8-8, mais c’est à ce moment-là que son adversaire serre le jeu, se voit accorder quelques « Let » qui déstabilisent un peu le Finlandais, qui s’incline finalement 11-8.


Yet another match that was very pleasant to watch, during which the two opponents played tit-for-tat. The Finn, who had come out of the qualifications, is not impressed by the number 1 seeded of the tournament, but eventually loses the first game 11-9.

In the second game, he fights tooth and nail, saving 4 game balls, but finally loses 14-12 after a series of ever-more-contested rallyes. In the third game, the player from the Netherlands takes the lead 6-3, but the young Finn comes back till 8-8, the moment chosen by his opponent to play tight, get a few “Lets” who drive the Finn a bit out of the game, and Weenink makes his way into the quarter-finals, 11-8 in the last game.

Ashley Davies (ANG, n°161) – Rui Soares (POR, n°169) : 8-11 11-9 11-8 11-9

Le Portugais démarre mieux avec plus de variété dans son jeu, et gagne logiquement le premier jeu. Malheureusement pour lui, le match s’inverse dès le début du second jeu, avec une prise d’initiative plus forte cîté Anglais, et une légère passivité pour le Portugais. Malgré un match serré jusqu’au bout, Davies gagne les 3 jeux suivants et se qualifie pour les quarts, où il affrontera Joel Hinds.

The Potuguese player makes a better start, putting a lot of variety in his game, he rather logically wins the first game. Unfortunately for him, things change when the second game starts, the Englishman takes the initiative earlier than in the first, while the Portuguese is a bit shy in his attacks. Despite a match that remains uncertain until the end, Davies earns his ticket for the next round, where he will be playing Joel Hinds.

Auguste Dussourd (FRA, n°225) – Tom De Mulder (BEL, n°216) : 11-5 11-7 9-11 11-8

Jour de chance pour le jeune joueur de Créteil !! Après été avoir repeché, suite au forfait du Français Christophe André, il s’impose en 4 jeux contre la wild-card, le Belge Tom De Mulder. Le jeune Bleu impose son jeu et ses attaques dès le début du match, et malgré la perte du 3ème jeu s’impose avec autorité en 4 jeux.

Today was a lucky day for the young player from Creteil ! After his fellow Frenchman Christophe Andre withdrew from the tournament, he was designated lucky loser and won in 4 games against the Belgian player Tom de Mulder (who had got a wildcard for this tournament). The young Frenchman plays well, with a lot of attacks from the very start of the match, and despite the loss of the 3rd game, he wins in 4 games.

Arthur Moineau (FRA, n°155) – Damien Volland (FRA, n°198) : 11-4 14-12 8-11 11-6

Un très bon début de match du brestois qui s’impose grâce à des amorties bien senties dans la première manche 11-4. Le deuxième jeu est plus serré, mais il écarte une balle de jeu pour le remporter à l’issue d’un tie-break indécis. Dans la 3ème manche, le jeu se tend quelque peu et le Nimois remporte le jeu.

Dès l’entame du 4 jeu le Brestois heurte involontairement le talon de son adversaire à la fin de son coup, le jeu est donc interrompu quelques minutes, mais fort heureusement le joueur de Valence peut reprendre la partie. A la reprise les intentions du Brestois se font plus fermes, et il s’impose en 4 jeux devant un public acquis à sa cause.

Everything starts well for the Brest player who cleverly drops a lot in the first game, to win it 11-4. The second game is more uncertain, he has to defend a game ball but eventually wins a tight tie-break. In the 3rd game, both players get a bit tense, and the player from Nimes comes back to 2-1.

As soon as the 4th game starts, the Breton involuntarily hits his opponent’s heel with his racket, this leading to a medical stop for a couple of minutes, and fortunately the player from Valence can continue playing. When the game starts again the player from Brest makes a handful of nice shots that bring him to the victory, in front of a crowd whose favorite he already is!

Adam Murrils (ANG, n°125) – Jamie Henderson (ECO, n°183) : 11-5 11-6 11-9

2 joueurs au style assez identique , pour un vrai plaisir des yeux pour les spectateurs avec une grande variété de coups. Mais l’Anglais est plus précis à ce jeu-là, et malgré une belle opposition de l’Ecossais, le premier nommé s’impose sans trop de frayeur en 3 jeux.

Both players have more or less the same style of play and the crowd truly enjoyed this variety of shots. Anyway, the Englishman has more control of the situation, despite a nice fight back from the Scot, and the former wins rather quietly in straight games.

Mark Fuller (ANG, n°225) – Phil Nightingale (ANG, n°216) : 11-4 11-3 11-8

Match à sens unique, avec un ex-Brestois, Mark Fuller, qui dès le début du match impose sa tactique et déplace très bien le très grand Nightingale. Celui-ci ne peut que subir la maitrise de Fuller, qui s’impose en 3 jeux.

Mark Fuller, a former player from Brest, doesn’t hesitate much and from the very start of the game gets the very tall Nightingale moving a lot on the court to retrieve his shots. Nightingale can only witness Fuller’s control, and Mark makes it to the next round in 3 games.

Lyell Fuller (ANG, n°166) - Aamar Altamimi (KOW, n°93) : 11-9 11-9 11-4

Le denier match s’annonçait indécis, il ne le fut que très peu. En effet, le jeune Anglais Fuller impose d’entrée de jeu un rythme élevé, que le Koweitien Altamimi ne peut pas suivre, faisant de nombreuses fautes directes. Malgré de très jolis coups d’attaque, la tête de série n°2 sort dès son entrée en lice, et nous aurons donc un Fuller/Fuller en quart.

The last match of the day promised to be a tough one, it proved not to be. The young Englishman, Lyell Fuller instantly brings a quick pace to the game, which the Kuwaiti Altamimi struggles to follow : as a result he makes a lot of unforced errors. Despite a couple of nice attack shots, the number-2-seeded player is out of the tournament after a single match, and we’ll witness a Fuller/Fuller game tomorrow !

Jaako Vähämaa (FIN, n°184) – Auguste Dussourd (FRA, n°225)               11-3 11-3 11-7

The Finn, for his first match in the tournament, wins authoritatively and rather easily against the young Frenchman, who couldn’t get himself into his match. A straight-sets victory for the Finnish player.

Phil Nightingale (ENG, n°217) - Joeri Hapers (BEL n°261)                   11-6 11- 6 11-7

Joeri, a bit tired after his first match that lasted for almost 90 minutes, doesn’t get himself quickly into the match. He can’t find a way to move the giant Englishman, and struggles to retrieve his opponent’s volleys. The young Belgian is out of the tournament in straight sets.

Baptiste Masotti (FRA, n°206) – Julian Tomlinson (ENG, n°241)               11-3 9-11 11-8 11-8

From the very start of the match, Baptiste plays on a quick pace, and delights the public with varied shots, a real pleasure for the eyes ! After winning the first game, he loosens his grip on the game a little, but is back in the 3rd to eventually make his way into the main draw in 4 games.

Damien VOLLAND (FRA, n°198) - Alex Noakes (ENG, n°228) : 11-9 11-9 10-12 8-11 11-7

Yet another great match from these two players who fight fiercely on every single rally. Damien takes the lead rather easily in the first two games, and gets two match balls in the 3rd. The young Englishman doesn’t panick and takes advantage of a temporary drop in concentration of the Frenchman to win both 3rd and 4th games. Le finlandais, pour son entrée dans le tournoi, s’impose avec autorité et sans difficultés face au jeune français, qui n’a pas réussi à rentrer dans son match. Victoire sans appel 3/0 pour le Finlandais.

Phil Nightingale (ENG, n°217) - Joeri Hapers (BEL n°261)                             11-6 11- 6 11-7

Joeri, fatigué de son premier match qui a duré pas loin de 90 minutes, a du mal à rentrer dans le match. Il n’arrive pas à déplacer le géant Anglais et subit énormément notamment au niveau des volées de son adversaire. Le jeune Belge quitte le tournoi en 3 jeux.

Baptiste Masotti (FRA, n°206) – Julian Tomlinson (ENG, n°241)                          11-3 9-11 11-8 11-8

Baptiste impose dès le début du match un rythme élevé et gratifie les nombreux spectateurs d’un jeu varié et plaisant à voir. Après avoir gagné le premier jeu, il subit une baisse de régime dans le second, mais reprend les initiatives dans le 3ème pour finalement gagner son billet pour le tableau principal en 4 jeux.

Damien VOLLAND (FRA, n°198) - Alex Noakes (ENG, n°228)                            11-9 11-9 10-12 8-11 11-7

Encore un superbe match entre ces deux joueurs qui se rendent coup pour coup. Damien domine assez facilement les deux premiers jeux, et se procure deux balles de matchs à 10/8 dans le troisième. Le jeune Anglais s’accroche et profite d’une baisse de concentration du Français pour gagner le 3ème puis le 4ème. Le 5ème jeu est indécis mais le jeune Nimois reprend les initiatives et s’impose 11/7.

Here we are, "Brest International Squash Classic" is about to emerge, in early April at the North-West tip of Brittany, and it's a comeback on the international stage for us, some 11 years after two WISPA tournaments. interesting to note that our event is now the 5th PSA tournament in France in 2015, along with Nîmes, Château-Arnoux, Jeu de Paume Paris and Angers.

For the record, the first WISPA tournament saw the Frenchwoman Isa Stoehr coming away with victory, followed the year after by Dominique Lloyd-Water from England.

Hopefully this first edition will also lead a Frenchman to the final victory !

High quality players will be competing in this first edition, with no less than 10 nationalities, and several well-known players here in Brest : the first one being of course Arthur (Moineau), our Club Number One, but let's also talk about Mark (Fuller), who used to play with us in N1 (French Club Championship Premier League) a couple of years ago.

The final preparations are under way for us to be ready for this tournament, that will, we dare to hope so, be a real squash festival !

BREST, LE RETOUR!!!!

Ca y est, le 'Brest International Squash Classic' va voir le jour début avril dans la cité du ponant. Nous devenons le 5ème PSA sur le sol Français, avec Nîmes, Château-Arnoux, Jeu de Paume et Angers.

Une nouvelle aventure de tournoi international donc, 11 ans après les deux éditions du WISPA. Pour la petite histoire, la première édition du WISPA avait été gagnée par Isa Stoehr, et la seconde par l'Anglaise Dominique Lloyd-Water. Espérons que cette première édition reviendra également à un joueur Français !

La qualité est au rendez-vous pour cette première, avec pas moins de 10 nationalités, et plusieurs joueurs bien connus du côté de Brest, à commencer par Arthur (Moineau) le leader du club, ou encore Mark (Fuller) qui a joué avec nous en N1 il y a quelques années. Derniers préparatifs donc pour un moment qu'on espère être une vraie fête du squash.

Un petit mot également pour la PSA, c'est tellement plaisant de travailler avec des passionnés qui essayent de développer le squash. Merci à eux pour leur soutien.
