25-Nov, Final
[1] Victoria Lust
(Eng) 3-2 Millie Tomlinson (Eng)
9/11 11/6 5/11 11/9 11/8 (70m)
CHRISTIAN BILLARD REPORTS
So this is the end of the 21° Monte-Carlo Squash Classic
2016. After the win of Jenny Duncalf last year, this edition
sees yet another English winner, which was highly
predictable as we had a 100% English Final!

The final
opposed the top seed 1 Vicki Lust against the upset
of the tournament Millie Tomlinson.
The first game was an one way game for Millie who put under
pressure on Vicki and finished 11/9.
In the second game, as Vicki was leading, a ball hit Millie
at 5/3. She seems to have trouble recovering, losing the
game 11/5.
The third game seems to be like the first match of yesterday,
with some contacts and decisions and won by Millie after 12
minutes 11/6.
In the fourth, Vicki put under pressure her opponent and
wanted to come back at the score, but too many mistakes at
the begining. But still, as Millie was leading 9-7 she found
the ressources to come back and clinch the game 11-9.
So in the fifth, nothing between the plaers, and none of
them wants to let go of the title, but Vicki finally
won 11/8 the last game, which makes it her first ever title
here in Monte-Carlo.
This 21th edition, full of surprises, have showed some new
players like the young Hania El Hammamy.
Aslo, it was very pleasant to have the full French and
Australian teams, and a few players of the Canadian Teams
here in Monte-Carlo...
See you all next year!

CONTRASTING FINALS
Vicky Lust had to
fight back from 1/0 down then 2/1 down to finally clinch
victory against up and coming Nadine Shahin.
According to spectators, it didn't go plain sailing in any
way shape or form, with a lot of contact, calls and as it
often happens in those circunstances, difficult calls at
crucial times that may or may not have been the correct ones.
Still,
the seed no1 survives to play the final against a surprising
Millie Tomlinson who overcame the seed no2, Donna
Urquhart.
The Australian made far too many mistakes in the first two
games, came back strongly in the third, and nearly made it
from 10/7, supported by the audience that wanted more! But
it wasn't to be and we'll have a 100% English final for only
the 4th time in 21 editions!

23-Nov,
Quarters
[1] Victoria Lust (Eng) 3-2 [7] Fiona Moverley (Eng)
11/5, 11/9, 9/11, 8/11, 11/5 (57m)
[8] Nadine Shahin (Egy) 3-2 [4] Line Hansen (Den)
7/11, 11/5, 11/9, 6/11, 12/10 (71m)
Millie Tomlinson (Eng) 3-0 [Q] Hollie Naughton
(Can)
11/3, 11/5, 11/9 (43m)
[2] Donna Urquhart (Aus) 3-1 [Q] Hana Ramadan (Can)
7/11, 11/2, 11/6, 11/7 (38m)
Intense
matches today, with our seed 4 Line Hansen falling to one of
Omar Abdel Aziz players - I guess he just raised his
coaching prices with Nouran Gohar and Emperor Gawad recent
success - Nadine Shahin.
Apparently, a lot of gruelling squash, decided at the back
of the court, hitting hard and high intensity coming from
the two ladies - and I'm sure a few fist pumps from Nadine!
A lot of decisions and Line will not be happy with letting
two match balls go...
Millie Tomlinson didn't have too much trouble
overcoming Hollie, who had a big win yesterday against
Rachael, 3/0.
As
for our top seeds, Vicky Lust ousted her compatriot
Fiona Moverly with Fiona doing one of her famous come back -
I think she is taking after Laura! - down 2/0, she clawed
back 2/2, but offered far too many errors to her opponent at
the start of the 5th...
And
Donna Urquhart used her experience to beat young Hana
Ramadan, after losing the first game, she went to plan B,
slowed down the pace to take back the control.
And it worked...

22-Nov,
First Round
If
the top seeds went through unharmed, Vicki Lust 3/0
against French hope Laura Pomportes in 24m and
Donna Urquhart with a bit more trouble against one of
the most gifted young players to come out of Egypt, Hania
El Hammamy, 3/1, close score, 48m, other favourites had
a bit of a bad time.

Let's
start with the French Coline Aumard - bad news for
the French Team to perform in a few days in the World Teams
- who had to retire injured: we were told it was her ankle
that caused her trouble. Will let you know if I get any more
infos.
Bad day too for American Olivia Blatchford who
battled hard but had to bow to Millie Tomlinson from
England 9/11 11/7 8/11 11/7 11/7 in one minute short of 70m.

Canadian
Hollie Naughton stopped Australian Rachael Grinham,
18 years after her first appearance in the event - don't
blame me for the info, Rachael, you know where that came
from!
Fiona Moverly is pleased to get through to the
quarters after a 4 setters against Belgium Star Nele Giis
and will play compatriot Lusty tomorrow...
As
for the last two matches, they both involved Egyptians:
Nadine Shahin took four game to oust Dutch Milou van
der Heijden, while Kanzy El Defrawy came very
close to create a big upset, taking Line Hansen to 5,
in 71m!
A nice multi national quarters - three English, two
Egyptians, one Danish, one Australian, one Canadian!
Bonne chances à toutes tomorrow!

21-Nov, Qualifying
Rounds It was
a long day for the girls as two rounds of Qualis were being
played.
First Round was not a good
round for the French representatives as the four of them
bowed in three games, under 30m - except for Chloé Mesic,
31m!
Which made a pretty open qualifying finals nationality-wise,
as we had 3 Egyptians (two competiting against each other
though), two Canadians, two Australians, and one Belgium!
A
bit of a surprise as Amina Yousri, who was top
qualifyer and had a bye this morning was despatched rather
easily by her compatriot Hana Ramadam, 3/0 in 33m.
Hana speaks fluent French, and actually made a big
impression to the French audiences when she won Nantes a few
weeks ago. Egypt wise, Hania El Hammamy took 4
games to ouest Canadian Danielle Letourneau.
No
joy for the Australians though - who came to train before
the World Teams Event starting next week - as they were both
beaten, Tamika Saxby by Belgium Nele Gilis, and
Christine Nunn by Canadian Hollie Naughton.
Two local interests in the main, with Wild Card Laura
Pomportes and seed 6 Coline Aumard..

Should be a few good matches tomorrow and as they say in
Monte-Carlo "la suite au prochain épisode..." |
