My my......
First of all, we had a superb encounter between Nele Gilis, hot
fav and National Champion, beating her little sister Tinne in the final
a few days ago)and Finn Emilia Soini.
Emilia
really pushed the #1 to the wall, and the knowledgeable audience admired
both the play and the esthetism of those beautiful young ladies. And the
score speaks for itself, the last three games: 11/9, 15/17, 11/9. Great
ambiance it was!
As for Marie Stephan, she gets her girl in 4, a few errors
crepped in, and a bit of frustration, but she is now in the final. She
really retrieved extremely well, and managed to find some superb length/width
game, that really took their toll on her opponent. A good tactical
construction that did pay off...

[1] Victor CROUIN (Fra)
3-0 [9/16] Ahmed El Mashad (Egy)
12/10, 11/2, 11/6 (38mn)
[3/4] Hugo MANDIL (Fra) 3/2
[2] Viktor BYRTUS (Cze)
8/11, 11/5, 4/11, 11/7, 15/13
A BIT EMOTIONAL....
Yeah, I know, I shouldn't. But it just happened that the two winners,
Victor and Hugo are a bit of two protégés of mine, as I've seen them
growing up. In the scale of things, the fact of them losing or winning
is of no importance whatsoever. But it's more about the fashion they won
today I guess.
Hugo had a big match today against Frenchman WallPiercing Alex Dubarry,
and to be honest, I didn't see Hugo ousting the seed2 Viktor BYRTUS a
few hours later. Little I knew...
The Frenchman was 1/0 down, and 2/1 down. The ending was nail bitting -
talking of which, don't think his dad, mum or brother have got any of
those left, and it looked to me that Danny his dad/coach had a few grey
hair more at the end...
But
there you have it, the Frenchboy clinches it, 15/13, toss of a coin, but
today, coin fell on the French side. The spectators were happy,
especially as it meant that a French Winner is garanted, as Victor won a
tricky match as well.
According to Emmanuel his Dad/coach, Victor took a terrible start, 6/1
down, but clawed his way back to 9/9, managed to tin the ball, got a tie
break still, and clinches the game 12/10, probably the turning of the
match..
Ahmed El Mashad didn't really showed up in the 2nd, but came back
strongly at the start of the 3rd, it was pretty close up to 3/3, but
Victor, too confident now, zoomed to victory, 11/6.
"Victor played well today, he didn't rush to the front too soon, he was
patient, and still managed to get a few nice winners", concluded the
quite rightly proud dad... |

[9/16] Utkarsh BAHETI (Ind) 3-1 [5/8] Srikar MUMMIDI (Wal)
11/3, 11/3, 8/11, 16/14 (25mn)
[3/4] Jared CARTER (Eng) 3-0 [2] Conor MORAN (Irl)
11/9, 11/4, 11/4 (34mn)
The
young Welsh took a bit of time to get into the match and to get used to
his opponent's game/trust his own game. The Indian was hitting very good
width in particular, and surprised the Welsh times and tems again.
But it eventually became a close game, that could very easily got to 5,
as the Welsh only bows 16/14 in the 4th. There is potential there...
As for the second match, the Irish looked completely overwelmed by the
loss of the first game - and the game of his opponent. Running of
confidence, the English got better and better, while the Irish, getting
more and more frustrated, just seem to lose a bit his way today.

GU15 - Report
[1] Nadiia USENKO (Ukr) 3-1 [5/8] Karina TYMA (Eng)
10/12, 11/7, 11/4, 11/6
[5/8] Engy HAMOUDA (Egy) 3-0 [2] Alina BUSHMA (Ukr)
11/8, 11/8, 11/8
Favorite
Nadiia Usenko got a nice scare against Englishv Karina Tyma
losing a very close game. After that, she refocused nicely to impose her
game more assertively.
But I'm told that the other seed, also from Ukraine, Alina Bushma
injured herself in the knee during the second game, which would have had
a bearing on the outcome I guess (especially when playing an "all in
touch" Egyptian. And so we have an upset, and Engy Hamouda is in
the final, if you can call having an Egyptian squash player in a final
an upset!!!... |

11/4, 11/4, 11/6 (25mn)
[9/16] Ahmed El Mashad (Egy) 3-0
[3/4] Yannick WILHELMI (Sui) 11/6, 11/8, 11/7 (28mn)
[3/4] Hugo MANDIL (Fra) 3-1 [9/16] Alexandre DUBARRY (Fra)
1/8, 10/12, 11/6, 11/5 (37mn)
[2] Viktor BYRTUS (Cze) 3-0 [5/8] Ziad AYMAN (Egy)
11/4, 11/3, 11/9
Most contested match these quarters was
no contest the Franco French Derby Hugo Mandil/Alexandre Dubarry.
I had a bit the impression of being Malcolm Willstrop looking at David
Palmer and John White the first time they came to Pontefract, with
Malcom telling them that piercing the wall was NOT the way to win a
match...
Joking but bless them, they hit far too hard, far too often. In
particular Alexandre who just doesn't vary his game enough, hitting 100%
of his shots. He'll gain a lot in varying height and weight in his shots.
Hugo weathered the storm pretty well, even if he wobbled a bit at the
end of the 2nd, serving out and a tin right after.
To be fair, Alex has 2 very heavy 5 setters yesterday, and it must have
been heavy in the legs this morning....

In complete contrast, lost
of drop shots, Egyptian Ahmed El Mashad ousted the 3/4 Swiss Wilhemi,
3/0. Hot French favorite did a serious match, good deep game that opened
the court nicely against Belgium Sanjai Jeeva. Top seed 2, Viktor BYRTUS
didn't take any prisoners against Ziad Ayman, 3/0. |
